News Around the Country

Election Day – Maine, Washington, and Michigan all have ballot initiatives that affect our LGBT friends, family members and neighbors.

MAINE:  As soon as Maine made marriage equality a reality, regressive forces on the right began an ballot measure to roll back rights Maine gays had struggled for years to achieve. This fall there will be a public vote on whether or not gay Maine same-sex couples will have equality.  Learn more.

WASHINGTON:  This spring, Governor Gregoire signed the 2009 Domestic Partnership Expansion Bill, completing the Domestic Partnership System in Washington State, giving all couples in Washington State equal protection under the law. Opponents of the domestic partnership law are seeking to repeal it through a referendum. Referendum 71 would ask voters whether the law should be approved or rejected. A YES vote to “APPROVE” keeps the law so that all families will have these protections in all parts of the state.

MICHIGAN:  In July, Kalamazoo City Commissioners passed an ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations in the city. Anti-equality forces immediately challenged the law and submitted 1,624 signatures to put the issue on the ballot, suspending the law until election time. Equality is not equality unless it’s equality for all of us. The right-wing continues to demonize transgender people to lie to uninformed voters. We need to stop them everywhere. We need to stop them in Kalamazoo.

Don’t live in these states, learn how you can help.

CIRCLE UP YOUR CAMPUS

Circle Up Your Campus is a four-week campaign to raise awareness about LGBT rights on college and university campuses nationwide. We believe that students, staff and faculty can make a difference in how campus communities perceive and support LGBT rights, and we believe that campus communities can in turn impact the larger city and state communities to which they belong.  Learn more.

SHOUT OUT!
U.S. Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.)

On Oct. 15 introduced the Every Child Deserves a Family Act, which would restrict federal funds for states that discriminate in adoption or foster programs on the basis of marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity.  Read more
Thank you Representative Stark for standing up straight for equality.
