GLBT awareness week takes place every year from April 1 through April 15 to commemorate the court’s decision and to promote awareness. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender, GLBT, was recognized as an official student organization at Texas A&M University April 1, 1985 after a legal battle spanning from 1976 to 1985. The court case, known as GSS vs. Texas A&M University, was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and served as a landmark case for many GLBT organizations at other universities across the nation.
