Atticus Circle has become a community partner with Ballet Austin for their Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project. This production, one of the most talked about Ballet Austin works, brings heartbreaking beauty to The Long Center stage March 23-25, 2012, as a timely reminder that injustice to one is injustice to all.
Beginning January 2012, LIGHT AUSTIN is a community-wide discussion surrounding the production including a multi-media human rights art project, lecture series, multi-genre educational programming, and the art of dance as you have never seen it before. All across Texas, thousands of children dread going to school to face the taunts, jeers, humiliation, physical intimidation and pain inflicted through harassment and bullying. Though legislation was passed in 2005 amending Chapter 37 of the Education Code to require school districts to adopt student codes of conduct that explicitly proscribe bullyingand harassment, we have seen unprecedented levels of harassment that have lead to multiple suicides throughout the state.During this legislative session, with your support, we helped win passage of two very important bills, Anti-Bullying HB 1932 and Youth Suicide Prevention HB 1398.
We worked side by side with national LGBT organizations and the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network for the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and we won. President Obama’s administration has reached a decision that Section 3 of DOMA is unconstitutional, which gives us hope that this wrong, too, will be righted. We will continue to galvanize our supporters and to push for the repeal of DOMA and the passage of a strong Respect For Marriage Bill.
